Sabrina Spellman: Witches in Pop Culture

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Review

This past October, we were introduced to the macabre and bewitching world of Sabrina Spellman in Netflix’s original series, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Unlike its ’90s predecessor, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the new show reveals the darker side of witchcraft with the Spellman family depicted as being part of a theistic Satanic coven. With its stunning cinematography, enchanting lore and talented leading actress, Kiernan Shipka, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina casts a deliciously wicked spell.

While the series may be controversial in some ways, Sabrina Spellman’s story is one of great importance to hereditary theistic witches that carry on the practice of dark, traditional witchcraft. Though many modern-day practitioners do not align themselves with the beliefs of the Spellman family and in no way associate their practice of the craft with the Devil, it is important to remember that theistic Satanic witches do exist, even if they are rare within the magical community. These witches have carried this intense tradition through their lineage. They are important like any modern-day witch, and their spellcasting plays a vital role in the balancing act of light and dark in the universe.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a beautiful and artistic portrayal of a hereditary theistic witch’s coming of age. While some minor concepts are overdramatized or mistaken, the show does provide an accurate depiction of what it is like for witches of my kind who are destined to follow the “Path of Night.” The witch’s dark baptism, presented heavily in this series, is not a ritual that most modern-day witches partake in, but it is a significant ceremony that has been part of my bloodline’s traditions for centuries and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has done a wonderful job portraying this sacred rite. As a hereditary and theistic blood witch myself, I am appreciative of the new Sabrina series. It sheds light on my family’s practices and invites viewers to explore the idea that theistic Satanic witches live among us and have a place in the magical world.

For the darklings and horror lovers everywhere, this show is a masterpiece. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina carries its viewers into the past—to a world where creatures roam in the dark woods and witches lurk around every corner. The show itself is alluring and compelling to the point that even if you wanted to, you could not look away.

Effy Winter is a hereditary blood witch and descendant of the Queen of Scottish Witches. She carries on the traditions and spellwork of her witch mothers, primarily working with the Devil throughout her practice of the craft. In her spare time, Effy works as a writer for various literary publications. She is the author of Flowers of the Flesh (Rhythm & Bones Press, 2019), a collection of poetry stirred by romance and dark witchcraft.
